A 22-month-old certification program for NRMCA producersÌ Environmental Management Systems (EMS) reached a 100-plant milestone this month, as Vulcan MaterialsÌ Palomar Transit Mix, Oceanside, Calif., now sports the Green-Star logo. Our participation in NRMCA's Green-Star Program has become a valuable part of the Western Division's Sustainability Program, which is designed to achieve economic, social and environmental balance in our operations and the communities we serve, notes Alan Wessel, division president, adding that Oceanside is the company's third Green-Star site in southern California.

"Vulcan Materials believes in Îplant level ownershipÌ where the manager is responsible for tracking environmental metrics as well as correcting any deficiencies in the EMS, says NRMCA Environmental Task Group Vice Chairman Doug Ruhlin (Resource Management Associates).

Green-Star has quickly become the industry's premier environmental management tool for producers who strive toward completing a rigorous, plant-specific certification process that utilizes a continuous improvement-based EMS, NRMCA reports. It fosters favored status with customers, increased revenues, improved efficiency, community goodwill, and liability/risk reduction. The RMC Research & Education Foundation is funding NRMCA work on Sustainable Concrete Plant Guidelines, providing ready mixed producers information to reduce energy consumption, carbon footprint, waste and potable water use, plus increase mixes' recycled material content.
