Australian precaster takes global BIM award

The use of Tekla BIMsight building information modeling technology helped Bianco Precast secure a segment contract for the $812 million South Road Superway project, the largest public works undertaking to date in South Australia.

A total redesign of an existing road network, it features an elevated transit corridor with multiple lanes, built of piers and post-tensioned segmental precast girders. When complete in December 2013, the project will improve access for local businesses and the surrounding residential and commercial area.

The South Road Superway pier and girder modeling earned Adelaide-based Bianco Precast top honors in the Concrete category of Tekla Global BIM Awards program—also recognizing BIM and Steel entries. Global program entries were the winners of regional competitions Tekla area officers and resellers held in 2011. The jury for the global competition consisted of leading BIM experts, Georgia Institute of Technology Professor Charles Eastman among them. Tekla Global BIM Awards 2011 gathered 46 construction projects from around the world; 2,000-plus votes were cast for the different models presented on the competition website.
