The first 7-Eleven store built to attain Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design rating points incorporates Greenblock Worldwide's 6-in. core insulating concrete forms. Sited in DeLand, Fla., just north of Orlando, the new 3,000-sq.-ft. store is a prototype for the convenience retail operator to determine if other properties are built to similar green standards.

7-Eleven Project Manager Jonathon Pauls, LEED Accredited Professional, sees two kinds of ÎgreenÌ in the store: the design itself and energy savings carrying to the bottom line. He and Greenblock staff evaluated a design transition from concrete masonry to ICF walls. Greenblock sister company Insulated Concrete Walls Inc. built the store envelope, engineered to withstand 120-plus mph winds, up to code in hurricane-prone Florida.

7-Eleven has outlined an aggressive [44-store] expansion plan for the Orlando area over the next three years, says Greenblock President Jeff Alexander. We're hopeful that as the energy modeling for this project is confirmed over the next several months, they'll choose our ICF walls for [other] new stores.
