ASTM and AASHTO dedicate Cement & Concrete and Materials Reference labs

A 34,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in Frederick, Md., has been converted to a shared ASTM International Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL), bringing under one roof the operations of six buildings.

Chryso’s Parker chairs ASTM Committee C09

ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates has named a new chairman: Steven Parker, North American sales and marketing manager for Chryso Inc., Rockwall, Texas. The 1,400-member committee oversees 170-plus international concrete standards essential to building and infrastructure engineering and construction.

Feds circle Martin Marietta, Vulcan market overlaps

In response to a potential Martin Marietta Materials–Vulcan Materials Co. merger the former company proposed in a late-2011, stock-for-stock exchange offer, the Department of Justice Antitrust Division has requested Vulcan provide ready mixed, aggregate and asphalt delivery detail from certain operations in 15 states. Vulcan noted in a Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) filing last month it had received from Justice officials a Civil Investigative Demand and request for additional information and documentary.

As concrete producers, promotion groups and contractors advance roller-compacted concrete as an alternative to asphalt pavements, a key specimen-testing standard is taking shape under ASTM Subcommittee C09.45 on Roller-Compacted Concrete, part of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.
