Several technical sessions at the ACI Spring 2010 Convention in Chicago, March 21-25, will highlight concrete repair in nontraditional and extreme conditions, while technical tours provide a firsthand view of unique Chicago-area concrete projects. On Tuesday, March 23, the Hot Topic Session: Reconstruction Efforts in Haiti will detail the recent rebuilding process, offering an eyewitness perspective of the earthquake aftermath and damage. Additional session topics will include seismicity of the Caribbean, on-site evaluation of construction in Haiti one month after the earthquake, and lessons learned from the event regarding reinforced concrete construction in the Americas.

Also on Tuesday, local and nationally recognized experts in concrete repair will deliver Concrete Repair - Xtreme Conditions Part 1 and 2, a full-day technical session featuring such landmark projects as the Bahai House of Worship, Ronald Reagan Airport, Fenway Park, the Interstate 35W Bridge reconstruction, and Old Chicago Post Office repair. The seminar will address post-tensioning repair in a coastal environment, repair as sustainability, and specifications for repair work.

Providing real-world insight on local concrete construction, technical tours will include March 22 visits to a) the recently completed 82-story mixed-use Aqua skyscraper, which features a wavelike exterior due to irregularly shaped floor slabs; and, b) the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago's sewage treatment facility, with $90 million in concrete structures finished during a recent $228 million upgrade.
