Architectural precast and cast stone producer MGA was recently certified to manufacture photocatalysis cement-induced concrete. Produced by Essroc Italcementi Group under the name TX Active, this cement gives concrete accelerated self-cleaning properties, enabling it to abate noxious substances produced by activities such as industry, transport and residential heating systems, and prevent them from accumulating through faster decomposition of pollutants.
MGA joins other TX Active-certified architectural precast makers, including Architectural Precast, a US Concrete Company, of Middleburg, Pa.; Coreslab Structures, Thomaston, Conn.; Gate Precast Company's Monroeville, Ala., Plant; Metromont Corp.'s Hiram, Ga., Plant; and Precast Specialties, Monroeville, Ind. Although the company has yet to complete a project using TX Active, MGA is working with local architects to get the product designed and specified on future jobs, and make the firms aware that the use of TX Active cement in green building construction can earn from 9-15 LEED points.
According to company Vice President Greg Hamann, MGA is aggressively getting the word out on the new product in New England, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland markets. We feel that this is going to be the future of concrete, he says. As it grows in popularity, its uses will transcend all avenues of the concrete market. With the increase in LEED-certified projects across the country, this will only heighten the awareness of the product and its benefits to the concrete industry and, most importantly, the environment.
