Taylor Concrete Products, Inc., Watertown, N.Y., has been accepted in the Occupational Health and Safety Administration’s (OSHA) SHARP Program, joining an elite group of only 75 New York state businesses to hold the honor and only one of two companies from Jefferson County to do so.
The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes small, private-sector employers that operate an exemplary safety and health management system. Acceptance into SHARP by OSHA singles out a business amongst its peers as a model of worksite safety and health. As a SHARP-certified facility, Taylor Concrete will be exempt from programmed OSHA inspections for 12 months.
Since 2005, Taylor Concrete has worked with the New York State Department of Labor On-Site Consultation Program to make improvements in the company’s safety program. During that time, an employee-led safety committee was established bringing employees from all departments and work areas together.
“Creating employee buy in at the onset of revamping and improving our company’s safety program was the critical step that allowed us to get to the point in which we could apply for consideration into the SHARP Program,” said Rich O’Connor, vice president of Taylor Concrete Products, Inc. “Our employees’ commitment to making Taylor Concrete a safe and healthy workplace, paired with the assistance we received from the NYS On-Site Consultation Program, allowed us to achieve our goal of participation in the SHARP Program.”
