Coal ash recycling reaches record level as production and use trends shift

“We are pleased to report that 52 percent of coal combustion products were beneficially used in 2015—up from the previous year’s record of 48 percent. For the first time, we are using more of these valuable resources than we are throwing away,” reports American Coal Ash Association Executive Director Tom Adams, taking stock of the central metric in the group’s latest “Production and Use Survey.”

Groups scribe energy efficiency standard in building investor, owner terms

The U.S. Green Building Council’s Green Business Certification affiliate is teaming with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to develop, deliver and promote the Investor Confidence Project (ICP) as the premier global underwriting standard for energy efficiency projects, primarily in building retrofits. ICP will join GBCI’s portfolio of credentials and certifications, topped by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building rating system.

Cement production undeniably minor in EPA greenhouse gas emissions census

U.S. portland cement production accounted for 2.3 percent of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e) emissions in EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program 2015 data. Modern kilns increasingly running on natural gas and other coal alternatives, coupled with limited offsetting import factors, appear to position the domestic cement industry favorably in a business often tagged as the source of 5 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions.

Shea Concrete chief Stratis elected 2016-17 NPCA chairman

Greg Stratis, president of Wilmington, Mass.-based Shea Concrete Products, began a one-year term as chairman on October 1, as NPCA concluded its 51st annual convention in Austin, Texas. Joining him as 2016-17 officers are Chairman-Elect Ashley Smith of Smith-Midland Corp. in Midland, Va., and Secretary/Treasurer Michael Hoffman of Lindsay Precast in Canal Fulton, Ohio.

Leading construction economist assesses slowing private, nonresidential work

Nonresidential construction fell for a second consecutive month. An ABC analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data shows seasonally adjusted, annualized spending of $687 billion in August, 1.1 percent and 1.3 percent lower than prior month and August 2015 levels, respectively. Four of the five largest nonresidential subsectors—power, highway and street, commercial and manufacturing—combined to fall 2.2 percent on a monthly basis in August 2016.
