Quikrete builds home for Toledo Zoo’s ‘saltie’

An existing solarium in the Toledo Zoo’s Reptile House recently underwent a renovation to turn it into an ideal habitat for the zoo’s newest resident, Baru—a 17-ft. saltwater crocodile believed to be the largest in North America.

Since the crocodile required a spacious and ecologically friendly home, A.A. Boos & Sons of Oregon, Ohio, and Great Lakes Concrete Restoration, Toledo, turned to Quikrete. Great Lakes applied more than fifty 3,000-lb. bulk bags of Quikrete Shotcrete MS over a rebar frame in the 80,000-gal. solarium pool before Graphite Design + Build, Toledo, sculpted the material into a landscape that reflected the crocodile’s native Australian environment. The shotcrete surface was finished with a concrete stain to maximize the authenticity of the highly anticipated zoo exhibit, Wild Walkabout, which opened on May 24.
Quikrete Shotcrete MS is a single component Micro Silica enhanced repair and restoration material that achieves a compressive strength of more than 9,000 psi at 28 days, and features very low rebound and permeability characteristics.
