ASTM A01 recognizes new high-strength steel grades in PC strand standard

ASTM Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys has approved the inclusion of grades 310, 325, 340 product in A416/A416M, Specification for Low-Relaxation, Seven-Wire Steel Strand for Prestressed Concrete, representing a 15- to 25-percent increase in minimum tensile strength from existing grades. A new annex in the standard will reference the three grades.

“In the global engineering and construction industries, there is considerable interest in high-performance materials for use in concrete structures,” says Korea Testing Certification Senior Researcher Taejin Hwang, who his chairing the task group revising A416. “For steel reinforcement, the term ‘high-performance’ encompasses several desired attributes including corrosion resistance, toughness, weldability and strength.” Higher strength strand joining A416 is manufactured in Asia being used in the construction of bridges, storage tanks, and other structures, he adds.
