C09 standardizes electrical current-based permeability measurement

ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates’ new C1876-19 standard presents a test method aimed at improving concrete durability assessment through measuring resistance to electrical current flow. Ability to resist such currents, along with exposure to aggressive fluids, depends on concrete pore size and porosity.

“Various forms of this test method are already used in the United States and globally, but differences in sample conditioning and testing details cause different results,” says University of Toronto Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering Professor R. Douglas Hooton. “This standard will help users obtain reproducible results.”

C09 welcomes participation in C1876-19 development, he adds, as members address potential changes allowing for alternate versions to verification procedures, plus development of an appendix for calculating a formation factor.
