Standard Concrete-Guided South Florida Team Tops Pci Big Beam

With oversight from Standard Concrete ProductsÌ John Robertson, a six-member team representing University of South Florida, Tampa, won the PCI Big Beam Contest, claiming a $2,000 prize. The Sika Corp.-sponsored contest, also known as Engineering Student Design Competition, requires producer-assisted teams to fabricate and test a precast, prestressed member. PCI's Student Education Judging Committee recognizes outstanding performance in each of six PCI zones, plus the international category (7); each zone winner is eligible to vie for the overall championship. Prizes are awarded for most efficient design with highest load capacity.Joining the South Florida team (PCI Zone 6) as Big Beam finalists were teams from the following schools, with assisting PCI members, by zone: Oregon State University, Keith Kaufman, Knife River Corp. Northwest, 1; University of Oklahoma Civil and Environmental Engineering, Michael Daly of Coreslab Structures (OKLA) Inc., 2; University of Nebraska, Rob Pearce of Concrete Industries Inc., 3; University of Notre Dame, John Reihl of StresCore Inc., 4; and, Norwich University, Vermont, Benjamin Cota of JP Carrara and Sons Inc., 5; and, Red River College, Winnipeg, Walter Meadus of Con-Force Structures, 7.
