Among 61 companies named in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., region, Chaney Enterprises was granted Û for the second year in a row Û an Alliance for Workplace Excellence Award. The 48-year family-owned and operated company is the only concrete and aggregate supplier in the Metropolitan region to be recognized. Chaney was noted for its supportive corporate culture and management, family and employee-friendly policies and practices, strong employee health and wellness initiatives, comprehensive growth and learning opportunities, and corporate social responsibility and employee volunteerism.

In addition, Chaney Enterprises was one among 33 recipients of the AWE Health & Wellness Trailblazer Awards, highlighting businesses that promote professional fulfillment and personal wellness at work, home, and in the community. To qualify, applicants undergo an assessment process led by an independent review panel of professors, Ph.D. professionals, and doctoral candidates in business, industrial and organizational psychology, and human resources. Chaney employs 200 delivery professionals, support personnel, and administrative staff located in nine Maryland counties.

Hanson Pipe & Precast has received multiple National Precast Association and American Concrete Pipe Association awards honoring industry leadership and exceptional operation and management in the interest of safety, efficiency and sustainability. The company's Winter Haven, Fla., facility Û placing highest among 400 plants Û was presented the Quality Award of Excellence by NPCA earlier this year. In addition, NPCA recognized Hanson Pipe & Precast facilities in Waco, Texas [Most Improved Plant + Gold rating]; Jersey Village, Texas [Gold rating]; and, San Antonio and La Place, La. [Platinum rankings].

Among operations honored by ACPA were Hanson Pipe & Precast Longview, Texas, for achieving more than 3,000 days without lost time [Zero Incident Rate in the Time Rate]. Fort Smith and West Memphis in Arkansas, plus San Antonio, Longview, and Robstown, Texas, plants were recognized in the Zero Incident Rate category. Hanson's El Mirage, Ariz.; Austin, Grand Prairie, Helmers and Jersey Village, Texas; and, New Orleans facilities were commended for incident rates less than four. Little Rock, Ark.; Oklahoma City; St. Martinsville, La.; and, Cedar Hill, Texas, operations received kudos for incident rates less than eight.

ORGANIZATIONS

Six cement plants committed to improving the environment and their communities were honored at the Ninth Annual Cement Industry Environment and Energy Awards by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) and Cement Americas magazine. In the spirit of continuous environmental improvement, emphasizes PCA President and CEO Brian McCarthy, these plants exceeded government regulations and local laws to improve energy efficiency, while producing a superior product. Facilities throughout the U.S. were recognized in six categories: Overall Environmental Excellence Û Lafarge North America Inc., Bath, Ontario; Outreach Û Holcim (US) Inc., Theodore, Ala.; Environmental Performance Û Lafarge North America Inc., Sugar Creek, Mo.; Land Stewardship Û Cemex, Xenia, Ohio; Innovation Û Lafarge North America Inc., Tulsa, Okla.; Energy Efficiency Û CalPortland, Colton, Calif.

CTLGroup's board of directors announces the appointment of three new officers: Vice President Steven Smith,Ph.D., P.E., (left); Vice President Timothy Tonyan, Ph.D., (below left); and, Vice President Rick Carpenter (above right). They join the company's continuing officers, i.e., President & CEO Dr. Jeffrey Garrett, Senior Vice President Dr. W. Gene Corley, Treasurer Jeffrey Wolff, and Secretary Josephine Howard.

Smith leads CTLGroup's Washington, D.C., office, serving also as coleader of the Buildings & Facilities Practice Group. Tonyan is Materials Consulting Group manager and Materials & Products Practice Group leader. Carpenter heads Marketing and Business Development.

Raymond Bianchi has joined the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) as exhibit sales director, responsible for leading AEM's multi-show global sales program, which includes the ConExpo-Con/Agg mega-exposition. A seasoned, international sales and marketing executive who has organized and directed events in the U.S. and worldwide, Bianchi most recently served as show director and general manager at international events management consultancy Dolomite Innovations (Chicago), following positions as show director at Advanstar Communications (Chicago), international director at Miller Freeman (Dallas), and show director at CMP Media, successor to Miller Freeman (New York).

The Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute announces a new chairman and eight new Board of Directors members. CRSI Chairman John Simmet, president and CEO of St. Paul, Minn.-based Simcote, Inc., brings to his new role more than 32 years of industry experience, including the 1977 start-up with his father of Simcote, one of the first companies formed specifically to epoxy coat and fabricate reinforcing steel, or rebar.

Additionally, new board members elected to serve three-year terms include Regional Representative Directors Michael Doucet, Rebar Fabrication, CMC Americas, Seguin, Texas; and, Robert Shuhert, Ambassador Steel, Auburn, Ind. New At-Large Directors are Louis Colarusso, Erico, Solon, Ohio; Jon Kinnischtzke, Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel, Pueblo, Colo.; Keith LePage, Whitacre Engineering, Canton, Ohio; Roger Struble, Davis/J.D. Steel, Bellevue, Neb.; Timothy Thomas, American Steel Fab, Pevely, Mo.; and, Dale Wolf, Far West Steel, Boise, Idaho.

Dana Pugh of Roberts, Wis.-based County Materials Corp. was elected 2010 president of the Minnesota Concrete Masonry Association at its annual meeting earlier this year. Joining him as officers on the board are Vice President James Pluym, Superior Block Co.; Secretary Mark Severson, Anchor Block Co.; Treasurer John Pederson, Amcon Block & Precast, Inc.; and, Past President Brett Thompson, W.W. Thompson Concrete Products.

The new president of International Surface Fabricators Association is Solid Tops LLC founder and president Evan Kruger, also a charter member and director of The Artisan Group, an extensive network of North American fabricators. Kruger's term will focus primarily on the ISFA website [www.isfanow.org], Countertops and Architectural Surfaces magazine, ICE International Countertops Expo, and state and local ISFA chapter meetings.

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) announced election of its board members and the 2010 slate of officers. The new TCA Board of Directors president is Jimmie Ballard, national tilt-up product manager at CMC Construction Services (Houston). A 30-year-plus construction industry veteran, Ballard serves as chairman of the American Concrete Institute C-650 Tilt-Up Certification Committee.

Other officers serving the Board for 2010 are President-elect Ed McGuire of Bob Moore Construction in Arlington, Texas; Treasurer Glenn Doncaster of Citadel Contractors, Inc. in Apex, N.C.; and, Past-president Jim MacKinnon of Saunders Construction Inc. in Centennial, Colo. (Vice-president and secretary positions will be selected during the summer meeting.) Members newly elected to three-year terms on the board include Barclay Gebel of Concrete Strategies, LLC (St. Louis, Mo.) and Shane Miller of Divcon, Inc. (Spokane Valley, Wash.)

ACI FOUNDATION ACCEPTS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

The ACI Foundation will award eight $7,000-$10,000 fellowships to high-potential undergraduate and graduate students for the 2011-12 academic year, along with six $3,000 scholarships to graduate students tackling concrete subjects. The fellowships and scholarships are from private and corporate donors and cover candidates at U.S. and Canadian universities and colleges. The application process runs through Nov. 5, 2010; applicants and educators can obtain forms and information at www.scholarships.concrete.org.
