National Labor Relations Board Regional Director Rik Lineback approved settlement of an agency complaint whereby Terre Haute, Ind.-based N.E.W. Interstate Concrete Inc. a) recognizes International Brotherhood of Teamsters-affiliated Chauffeurs, Teamsters, Warehousemen & Helpers Local Union No. 135 as a representative of its drivers; and, b) pays nearly $19,000 to make five reinstated employees whole and cover their pension contributions.
The complaint alleged the producer unlawfully withdrew union recognition at two plants, ending a 25-year bargaining relationship; transferred employees to a nonunion alter-ego company to avoid union obligations; informed employees they would have to work nonunion to keep their jobs; and, made unilateral changes to overtime rules and pension contributions. Negotiating sessions for a new collective bargaining agreement between N.E.W. Interstate and Local 135 officials are in the works.
