A five-level, 157,945-sq.-ft. parking garage, servicing Pittsburgh's new Consol Energy Center, brought Roaring Spring, Pa.-based Newcrete Products top honors in the Commercial/Institutional Model - Concrete category of the 2010 Tekla Structures Building Information Modeling Awards. Occupying a 335- _ 127-ft. footprint, it is constructed entirely of precast, except for cast-in-place foundations and stair-tower steel framing. Documentation for a total of 440 precast/prestressed pieces, including architectural spandrels, columns, wall panels, double tees, slabs, inverted tee beams, rectangular moment beams, and light walls, was created using Tekla Structures software.
Also recognized for BIM deployment on the Consol Energy Center design was Technyx Canam, which topped the Commercial/Institutional Model - Steel category. Tekla Structures facilitated precast concrete modeling and coordination with the deck supplier on the 18,000-seat venue, also known as the Pittsburgh Arena, home to the National Hockey League's Penguins. Challenges unique to the project included design of over 300-ft.-long cambered trusses, plus more than 2,000 feet of catwalks that passed between bottom and top truss chords.
DPR Construction was recognized as Collaborative Project category winner for Sutter Medical Center - Castro Valley (SMCCV), a 130-bed replacement hospital scheduled for completion in June 2012. The seven-story building is a composite steel- and concrete-framed structure that meets California's new seismic design guidelines. Despite its complexity, the project is scheduled for delivery 30 percent faster than comparable healthcare projects in California due to the use of BIM technologies and an 11-party lntegrated Project Delivery team, Tekla notes.
The 2010 Tekla BIM Award winners were selected from a record 26 entries submitted by Tekla Structures users who modeled projects during the preceding year. Upon receipt of contestants' web models, project descriptions, photos, and supporting material, online voting was opened to the public prior to the mid-August 2010 Tekla North American User Meeting in Atlanta, where awards (including a Tekla Structures Viewer license) were presented. Winning projects and all submissions can be viewed at www.tekla.com/us/Pages/2010BIMAwards.aspx.
