U.S. Concrete Inc.
will move its corporate office by mid-year from Houston to Euless, Texas. The Dallas-area headquarters will be co-located with the home office of one of the producer’s largest regional businesses, Redi-Mix. The company employs 46 in Houston and will realize staff consolidation, cost savings, and improved operating efficiencies in the new location.

Individuals affected by the office move are being offered relocation or separation benefits accordingly. U.S. Concrete was founded in the late 1990s by Houston-based investors, but did not have charter operations in Texas. Deals for Redi-Mix and Ingram, plus bolt-on transactions, have given the company a major presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and west Texas.

Ontario-based interlocking concrete paver specialist F. von Langsdorff Licensing Ltd. has added Block USA/Hardscapes USA as its newest domestic UNI Pavers producer. Part of Cemex, the Birmingham-based concrete masonry producer will offer a variety of UNI Pavers in Alabama, with a focus on permeable and commercial applications. Block USA/Hardscapes USA is one of 180-plus operations across the world molding and marketing UNI paver and wall units.

The producer likewise joins UNI-GROUP U.S.A., the industry’s oldest concrete paver association and a leader in new product development and research, technologies and advancements—among them permeable paver designs dating to the late 1980s. “We look forward to working with Block USA/Hardscapes USA and are fortunate to add this outstanding company to our group,” says Harald von Langsdorff, president of F. von Langsdorff Licensing.

Florida Precast Industries Inc., a top manufacturer of Spancrete Brand precast concrete products and a division of Spancrete, has recently been awarded the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s (PCI) 2011 Award for Safety. The award recognizes FPI for receiving a “0” rating for DART, total case and lost workday incidence rates during 2010.

FPI General Manager Kristin Szymczak is honored to have received the award. “To be recognized by PCI for our safety record is a tremendous accomplishment. At FPI, the safety of our employees is always our number one concern. To have zero DART incidents, zero total case incidents and zero lost workdays is a respectable achievement, and I am proud of all of our employees for their diligence and dedication to a safe working environment.”

Separately, FPI announces the Precast/ Prestressed Concrete Industry (PCI) Level 3 certification of plant manager, Rayon Lawrence. The PCI Plant Quality Personnel Certification Program ensures precast plant employees have the knowledge and training required to provide high-level quality control in the manufacture of precast concrete products. PCI Level 3 is the highest level of Plant Quality Personnel Certification available from PCI.

To qualify, candidates must have two years of experience in the precast concrete industry, prior certification in PCI Level 1 and 2, and they must complete the four-day PCI schooling program. “At FPI, we strive to produce superior quality precast products,” says Kristin Szymczak, general manager at FPI. “Rayon has proved that he has the knowledge, experience and motivation to ensure that the products our customers receive are of the highest quality.”

Mark Pederson has been named CFO at Fabcon, a leading manufacturer of high-quality precast concrete solutions. Pederson’s responsibilities at Fabcon will include oversight of finance, accounting, treasury, risk management, contracts, information systems, and legal matters. Prior to joining Fabcon, Pederson was CFO at a large national general contractor headquartered in the Twin Cities. Pederson’s work was honored in 2010 when he was a finalist for the Minneapolis /St. Paul Business Journal’s “CFO of the Year” award in the large private company category.

Pederson graduated from Minnesota State University – Mankato with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He has been certified as a public accountant (inactive), management accountant, financial manager and construction industry financial professional.

Cemstone has announced that Lars Anderson has joined the company as Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Manager. Anderson brings to Cemstone a background in the quality field of the concrete and cement industry.

A South Dakota native, Anderson began working at a young age for his father in the family owned poured concrete wall business. He attended South Dakota School of Mines & Technology where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. After college, he joined Lafarge Cement in Baltimore, Md., as a Technical Sales Engineer where he worked with the cement plants, cementitious products, and Lafarge customers in the Northeast; he gained experience in cement production, troubleshooting issues and new product development. In early 2006, Anderson moved to Kansas City, Mo., as QA/QC Manager of Lafarge Ready Mix for Kansas and Missouri. There, Anderson developed mixes, managed technicians, and investigated concrete concerns at Lafarge’s nine Kansas City and three Wichita plants. He was also very involved with the local ready mix organizations.

Separately, Cemstone has appointed Gregory Kraut as Corporate Controller. Kraut will bring to Cemstone his experience as an accomplished financial and organizational leader with a proven track record of growth and profitability.

Kraut, a Minnesota native, began his career in the Twin Cities with a leading global technology company in the computer industry. He gained a strong background in finance and accounting, and also worked extensively with business operations focusing on manufacturing and administrative process improvements. After living and working in Lacrosse, Wis., and Saint Louis, Mo., Kraut resettled in Minnesota in 1993. He has served as Division Controller and Finance Director for several global manufacturing organizations, most recently for a company in the data storage, LED, and solar industry. Kraut earned his M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.


The National Concrete Masonry Association has elected to its Associate Member Division Board for four-year terms Paul Croushore of Lanxess Corp., Grady Gunn of Lehigh Cement Co., Todd Holyfield of Rockwood Pigments NA/Davis Colors, and Richard Isaacson of iwi group LLC. David Orton of SRW Products, James Hammer of Westblock Systems, and Robert Gravier of Allan Block Corp. have been elected to three, two and one-year terms, respectively.

Additionally, Paul Croushore has been named Associate Member Division Board representative to the NCMA Board for a four-year term, while Marshall Brown of ACM Chemistries has been named as the division’s representative to NCMA Executive Committee for two years. The terms begin at the conclusion of the 2012 annual convention, scheduled in conjunction with the Icon Expo in Orlando.

The Portland Cement Association has been honored with two silver awards in Association TRENDS’ 2011 All-Media Contest. PCA was recognized in the Promotional Items category for its World of Concrete booth t-shirt giveaway that further built awareness for the Think Harder.Concrete imaging and branding program. It received an award in the Annual Report category for State of the Industry 2011.

The TRENDS All-Media Contest is an annual competition held exclusively for associations, recognizing the most creative and effective communication vehicles developed in the industry over the prior year. The 2011 competition included more than 450 entries in 22 categories of association communications.

PCA was honored at the 33rd Annual Salute to Association Excellence, February 10, at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C. The winning entry was on display at the event, along with other winners. As well as being honored at the Salute to Association Excellence, this year’s All-Media Contest winners were featured in the January issue of TRENDS, and online.

Mike Ferguson, Multiquip, Inc., Carson, Calif., is the new council director of the Manufacturer’s Advisory Council and Jeremy Clark, Chicago, has been elected as the new secretary/treasurer. Craig Dahlgren, St. Louis, Mo., and Tim Lickel, Sussex, Wis., were elected new members of the Council and Wayne Allen, Sturtevant, Wis.; Jim Hughes, Fair Lawn, N.J.; and, Doug Rhiel, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., were re-elected directors.


ACE-CO, a division of Libra Systems, announced the hiring of Richard Tumin as Sales & Marketing Manager. “Rich has been a great addition to ACE-CO. He brings solid experience and knowledge garnered from his many years within the construction and automation industries,” said Libra Systems President Ken Cardy.“ With Rich on board we look forward to ACE-CO’s continued accelerated growth and increased industry presence to better serve our customers.”

Iowa Mold Tooling Co. Inc. (IMT) has announced the promotion of Jim Hasty to the position of vice president–general manager of IMT. Hasty has served as the company’s vice president of sales for the past two years, and brings more than 20 years of industry experience in management and team leadership to the position. In his new role, he will be responsible for leading all IMT operations and driving business strategy for the company’s complete line of material-handling equipment and commercial vehicles. In addition, he will continue in the interim to directly lead sales operations for IMT.

Prior to joining IMT, Hasty was the vice president of corporate marketing and strategic business development for Wabash National Corporation, where he held a variety of leadership positions including director of sales and vice president of marketing and sales operations. He has also held management positions at The Stanley Works organization, where he led sales operations for North and South America, and Australia.

To enhance customer and distributor support, Terex Roadbuilding announced the appointment of Jim Aslin as the full-line road building equipment district manager for the Northeast. He has more than 30 years of field service and sales experience, and for the past five years he has sold the Terex mixer truck line. Aslin is now the single-source contact for customers and distributors for all Terex road building equipment lines, making it easier and more efficient to do business with Terex Roadbuilding, thanks to new simplified sales and support processes for equipment manufactured in Canton, S.D.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Aslin has equipment sales and support responsibilities for the states of New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. He is also a member of the product development team working on updates to the Terex front discharge mixer truck line.
