‘Feral’ gateway structure nabs decorative concrete award

56 FFii 150The Doral Park Pavilion by Douglas Wood Associates, Coral Gables, Fla., won the WOW! Award for best overall entry in this year’s Decorative Concrete Council competition, recognizing vertical and horizontal applications. Located on the outskirts of Miami, the structure was designed by internationally-renowned artist Michelle Oka Doner, who envisioned a “feral” gateway to the adjacent Everglades.

Ace brewer paves Piedmont path

FF-ICP1-150A nearly 150,000-sq.-ft. permeable paver installation at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. satellite operation in Mills River, N.C., took Concrete Paver–Permeable–Commercial honors in the 2014 Hardscape North America Project Awards, sponsored by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, National Concrete Masonry Association and Brick Industry Association.

Armed forces honor

FINALFORM-1-150One of 34 projects named in the Tilt-Up Concrete Association’s 2014 Achievement Award winners, the Sugar Land, Texas, Veterans Memorial took top honors in the Special Projects category. The memorial consists of an obelisk with five concrete panels, symbolizing the five branches of the military; a flag panel entryway; and, a bridge. Each element was cast on site using casting beds and wood formwork, and were erected in less than three days.

Energy research laboratory breaks ground at Hampden-Sydney College

EnergyLabI-150Once completed in December, a 26- x 45-ft. freestanding research facility will provide students and faculty at Hampden-Sydney College’s departments of Physics & Astronomy and Mathematics & Computer Science a unique opportunity to research energy monitoring, energy conservation, and sustainable buildings in a grant-based project on its Virginia campus.
