ACI honors French museum, other global projects for concrete innovation

52 FFiii 150A museum with an ornate, lightweight concrete screening system on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea took top honors in the American Concrete Institute’s inaugural Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards competition. Submitted by the ACI Paris Chapter, the MuCEM: Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations in Marseille, France, is a classic monolithic design built around a perfect square.

Argos Innovation Center to tackle industry challenges

64 CementosArgos 150Located on the campus of EAFIT University in Medellín, Colombia, the recently opened Argos Innovation Center is a sign of the company’s commitment toward the productive, competitive and sustainable growth of the industry, the region and the country. Through its Innovation Center, Argos hopes to create a meeting place for the challenges of the cement and concrete industry and academic solutions, stimulating the discovery of new uses of the materials. The center is currently hosting R&D, new business development and innovation processes that are tackling industry challenges throughout different regions, including the U.S. and Caribbean where Argos has operations.

Slipformed tower attracts magnetic levitation-run elevators

56 FFii 150Essen, Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Elevator broke ground in October 2014 on a unique 246-m (807-ft.) tall tower in Rottweil that will house 12 shafts within a 21-m (69-ft.) diameter concrete shell, allowing engineers to test elevator speeds up to 18 m/second (59 feet). The shell was completed in July, topping out at 232 meters (761 feet)—the level of a future platform offering a panoramic view of Rottweil, the Black Forest and Alps peaks.
