ICPI honors innovative hardscape designs

The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute’s 2019 Hardscape North America awards program recognized 18 winning and 19 honorable mention projects late last year during the Hardscape North America trade show at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. The program honors top residential and commercial hardscaping designs for walkways, patios, pool decks, outdoor living kitchens and living spaces, and driveways as well as commercial plazas and streets.

The Fly Rod Trail Residence in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., took the Segmental Retaining Walls – Residential category. Wisconsin Rapids-based Progressive Lawn Care & Summit Snow Removal installed County Materials Corp.’s County Block Retaining Wall System—a simple pinning system that aligns and locks units in place—to create the decorative serpentine curves installed throughout the project.

Palmer Field in Middletown, Conn., took the Concrete Paver – Commercial < 15,000 sq. ft. category. Torrison Stone and Garden of Durham, Conn. worked alongside landscape architect Brian Murphy, PLA, ASLA using Cambridge Pavers products to modernize the ballpark.

A record 165 projects entered 18 hardscape categories including Concrete paver, residential (< and > 3,000 sq. ft.) or commercial (< and > 15,000 sq. ft.); Concrete paver permeable, residential or commercial (all sizes); Segmental retaining walls, residential or commercial (all sizes); and, Combination of hardscape products, residential (< and > 4,000 sq. ft.) or commercial (all sizes). Projects built in the U.S. and Canada between November 1, 2015 and June 30, 2019 were eligible for entry into the competition.

Awards submissions were judged on design (including use of color, shape, texture and pattern); quality of construction and craftsmanship; compatibility with related construction materials and systems; construction innovation; and, overall excellence by industry experts. The presentations demonstrated that designers, product manufacturers, distributors, and installers must all play collaborative roles to achieve successful projects worthy of national recognition.

“Each year at HNA Awards presentations we see more tremendous work on display, the product of great creativity, attention to detail, and collaboration between designers, manufacturers and installers. We’re proud to honor their exceptional accomplishment,” says Dr. Marshall Brown, chair-elect, ICPI.

The HNA Awards program is produced by ICPI; endorsed the National Concrete Masonry Association and Brick Industry Association; and, sponsored by Belgard, iQ Power Tools and Keystone Hardscapes. ICPI will be giving the call for 2020 entries by mid-year.
