Carbon footprint calculator helps Cemex advance sustainability goals

Cemex S.A.B. de C.V. of Mexico announced recently significant progress in key indicators related to sustainable construction, the company’s carbon strategy, environmental and biodiversity management, workplace safety and its contribution to provide affordable housing and infrastructure to communities around the world.

Sustainability seal

Products and services in the Cemex building solutions portfolio with outstanding sustainability performance will carry a green- and blue-lettered seal, "ecoperating." Earmarked for 2012-13 roll out in European and Latin American businesses, it was developed through a rigorous internal process that measures the environmental or social impact of a wide range of value propositions—from low (embodied) carbon dioxide cement and concrete products or paperless invoicing services, to construction solutions like concrete pavements with smart LED lighting or affordable-housing initiatives.

LEED 2012 changes too sweeping for timely shift from 2009 version

The addition of measurement and performance tools affecting construction material and product specifications for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design certification-targeted projects is among factors behind U.S. Green Building Council’s decision to delay a final LEED 2012 ballot until later this year, then rebrand the new version LEED v4 for a mid-2013 release.

Holcim on track to achieve sustainability targets

The 2011 Holcim Corporate Sustainable Development Report shows that the Swiss construction materials giant Holcim Ltd. is on track to achieve its sustainability targets. The self-imposed targets for reducing dust and NOx emissions have been met, and Holcim remains a leader in the industry with the lowest CO2 emissions per metric ton of cement produced. For CEO Bernard Fontana, sustainable development is very important, with the highest priority being occupational health and safety.

ISO standard addresses environmental impacts of concrete

The Geneva-based group whose 9000 and 14000 series standards are recognized in quality assurance and environmental management systems worldwide has added a concrete-specific document suited to the sustainability era.
