Charah slag, pozzolan finishing technology debuts in the Empire State

Fly ash processor Charah Solutions Inc. has sited its first facility with patented granulated blast furnace slag grinding technology at the Port of Coeymans, 100 miles up the Hudson River from New York City. With barge, rail and truck access, it will finish MultiCem-branded slag cement to be distributed through the company’s MultiSource materials network.

“The Port of Coeymans is an ideal location for us to serve concrete customers across the Northeast,” says Charah Solutions CEO Charles Price. “The opening of this facility continues to highlight the importance of our acquisition of SCB International last year and is the first of many facilities we expect nationwide.”

SCB-modeled mills can be installed for a fraction of the cost of competing grinding methods, he adds, and scaled up or down to meet market demands—allowing the company to serve customers in markets where fly ash or other supplementary cementitious material supplies are limited. The process can also be used for grinding natural pozzolans to create additional binder alternatives to fly ash and expand Charah Solutions’ concrete-grade offerings.

“We are targeting both large and small markets, where the supply of fly ash is currently constrained, to rapidly deploy our technology,” notes Vice President of Byproduct Sales Scott Ziegler. “We can be up and running within a few months and produce as little as 30,000 tons or more than 100,000 tons profitably. This compares to traditional vertical roller mills or ball mills that require significant capital investments, need large production volumes to be profitable, and can take years to obtain the necessary construction permits.”
